2016 APCA Conference:
Copyright in the Asian Pacific: the challenges and opportunities

20-22 November 2016 • University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law
Organiser :
Asian Pacific Copyright Association
Law and Technology Centre, University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law

The 2016 APCA Conference will be held in Hong Kong, in conjunction with the Law and Technology Centre, University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law, from 20-22 November 2016.

The Conference theme is: Copyright in the Asian Pacific: the challenges and opportunities.

At APCA’s inaugural conference in November 2015, Professor Adrian Sterling presented a draft Asian Pacific Copyright Code (available here) for discussion. As is usual for international legal instruments, the Code is drawn in broad terms, leaving much discretion to individual States. The theme of this Conference will address additional possibilities for the Code - should it for example include specific minimum standards and /or exceptions for the protection of indigenous culture; orphan works; Internet and other digital works; cultural heritage; education and libraries, etc. If so, what form should these minimum standards and/or exceptions take? Conversely, are there matters that should be omitted from the Code and left entirely to the legislatures of individual States?

Training Programme: Data Mining for Gold-How to Identify and Assess Patented
Technologies to Help Solve Particular Challenges

21-23 November 2016 • P1402, 1/F Academic 1 (Purple Zone), City University of Hong Kong
Organiser :
City University of Hong Kong

Trainers: Dr. Phyl Speser, Chief Executive Officer of Foresight Science & Technology Inc.

This is a good opportunity for you to understand the basics of technology scouting – think of this as preparing you to be a good tech scout for your current / future employer looking for a unique solution to touch technical problem, or to look for the right technology as the cornerstone of a new startup to solve a problem. A certificate will be awarded to those with full attendance.

Key Sessions
• This training program will involve developing the analytical skills and knowledge base to stay on top of a given domain using sources including: Journals, Research Institute's own websites/social media, global technology portals, citation analysis, key companies etc.
• Another key part will be on 'demystifying' the phone. Breaking away from solely using emails and formal teleconferences to build a better rapport with technology providers and targets. Help make the 30 second “elevator pitch” on who you are and what you can offer as a second nature to the students.
• There will be a session on how to really evaluate technology - is it a real gem, best applications and so on. Similar to a Foresight Go/No Go report. This will include initial patent assessment, not full FTO (freedom to operate) analysis, but an understanding of whether there are some patents to be weary of.

Program Outcome
On completion the students should be able to (with some guidance) act as a competent technology scout, working within a tech company, or tech transfer professional in Technology Transfer Offices or other intermediary services.

The Professional IP Update 2016: Hong Kong IP Update
(The 16th IEEM Intellectual Property Seminar)
30 November 2016 • Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department, Function Room 2501,
25/F Wu Chung House, 213 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai, Hong Kong
Organiser :
Institute of European Studies of Macau
Intellectual Property Department

IP trading has brought to the fore the challenges of valuation of IP assets and their trade separate from traditional connections such as goodwill, products, services or indeed any physical embodiment. The legal title of intellectual property can be transferred, but what is its value without ancillary know-how, workforce, or marketable product? Does the value of IP then lie in a mere promise, or in the ability to use an IPR as a nuisance to other traders?
